My message

At the center of my research is a core principle: “Every single human being is creative.”  My research argues that future economic growth will be driven by human creativity and innovation. The basic logic of our economic prosperity dictates that further economic development will be driven by the further development of human creative capability.  I see the greatest challenge of the creative age is to find a way to tap and harness everyone’s creative potential.

What is most precious for me

I live in Toronto with my wife and business partner, Rana Florida. My hobbies include road cycling and guitar playing.

Milestones in my life

My major achievements

I am the author of the national and international best-seller The Rise of the Creative Class, which transformed the practice of economic development around the world.  My latest book, Who's Your City?, also a national and international best seller, explains the importance of place in a global economy.

I am the author of The Flight of the Creative Class and Cities and the Creative Class. My previous books, especially The Breakthrough Illusion and Beyond Mass Production, paved the way for his provocative looks at how creativity is revolutionizing the global economy.

I am a regular columnist and blogger for the Globe and Mail and have written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Economist, Harvard Business Review, and The Atlantic Monthly. I have been featured as an expert on MSNBC, CNN, BBC, NPR, and CBS.

I am one of the world’s foremost public scholars on economic competitiveness, demographic trends, and cultural and technological innovation.  Esquire Magazine recently named me one of the “Best and Brightest.” My ideas on the “creative class,” commercial innovation, and regional development have been featured in major ad campaigns from BMW and Apple, and are being used globally to change the way regions and nations do business and transform their economies.

I am Director of the Martin Prosperity Institute and Professor of Business and Creativity at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto. Previously, I have held professorship at Carnegie Mellon University and taught as a visiting professor at Harvard and MIT and was a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution. I have earned my Bachelor’s degree from Rutgers College and Ph.D. from Columbia University.   I am also the founder of the Creative Class Group, an advisory services firm, charting new trends in business and community.
