Three winners were chosen out of 1500 photographers from over 30 European countries by a jury chaired by Professor of photography and President of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA) Chris Wainwright. The jury consisted of renowned photography and art professionals: Claude Bussac, Director of PhotoEspaña, Spain; François Hébel, Director of the Rencontres d’Arles, France; Orsolya Kőrösi, Managing Director of the Hungarian House of Photography, Hungary; Vangelis Ioakimidis, Director of the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography, Greece; Elina Brotherus, photographer and video artist, Finland; Klavdij Sluban, French photographer of Slovenian origin.

The winners were:

1st prize: Daniel Halasz (Hungary), for his portfolio "Imaginary Diary" which, is a complex portfolio of images that uses to great effect the genre of the postcard. It reminds us that our future world is difficult to separate from our past, and that we might want to evaluate what we mean by progress.

2nd prize: James Naylor (United Kingdom) for his portfolio "Class of 2109". His project is an optimistic view of how a united world could look. "Class of 2109" takes the form of a high school yearbook and focuses on the positive hybridization of cultures in future generations.

3rd prize: Vincent Bitaud (France) for his portfolio "Car(e)less City". Through his project, Bitaud questions the structure of the City as we know it. If in the future we ban motor vehicles, how could we try to hide those hideous and useless concrete scars and let a little bit of nature back inside?

"Public’s Favourite Award"- chosen by the European public through an online voting process among 30 photos preselected by the jury - was given to the image "Heroes" by Balázs Szabó (Hungary).

The exhibition continues until 29 January 2010 (10am-6pm, Monday-Friday).

Venue: 12 Star Gallery, European Commission, 8 Storey's Gate, London SW1

Tube: St James' Park / Westminster Buses: 11, 24, 148, 211

The winning pictures will continue to travel through Europe and will be exposed:

in Thessaloniki (Greece) from 20 April to end May in the PhotoBiennale 2010;
